Therapeutic Rehabilitation Services

Equine-assisted therapy, also called hippotherapy, involves using horses to support human rehabilitation.  The horse’s rhythmic movements closely resemble the human walking pattern, which helps improve core strength and balance.

Activities such as grooming and riding can aid in emotional regulation, build confidence, and assist in recovering from trauma, benefiting physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

Types of Equine Therapeutic Services

  1. Hippotherapy:  A medical-grade intervention focusing on physical rehabilitation, often used for conditions like cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, or stroke recovery.
  2. Therapeutic Riding:  Focuses on learning riding skills to promote physical and emotional well-being, often used for cognitive, emotional, or social benefits.
  3. Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) / Psychotherapy (EAP):  Unmounted sessions focusing on psychological rehabilitation, trauma recovery, and building confidence.

Physical Benefits for Human Clients

  1. Improved Mobility and Balance:  The horse’s movement helps develop paraspinal muscles and postural control.
  2. Core Strengthening:  The constant need for adjustment while riding strengthens the trunk and pelvic muscles.
  3. Gait Improvement:  It can help normalise muscle tone and improve movement patterns in individuals with mobility challenges.

Equine Assisted Education (EAL)

Equine Assisted Education is an experiential learning method that uses interactions with horses, not as therapy, but to develop life skills, leadership, and social-emotional abilities.  Led by a highly qualified professional, these mostly ground-based sessions rely on the horses’ unbiased responses to strengthen communication, self-awareness, and resilience for individuals or groups.

Key Aspects of Equine Assisted Learning

  1. Experiential Approach:  Participants learn through hands-on activities with horses, such as grooming, leading, and obstacle courses, which require clear communication and partnership.
  2. Focus Areas:  EAL focuses on developing key skills including leadership, confidence, responsibility, problem-solving, and teamwork.
  3. Benefits:  Due to the honest, immediate feedback provided by horses, participants often experience increased self-awareness, reduced anxiety, enhanced mindfulness, and better emotional regulation.
  4. Target Audience:  EAL is suitable for individuals, families, and organizations, offering a unique alternative to traditional classroom or team-building environments.
  5. Facilitation:  Certified professionals manage these sessions to ensure safety and effective learning, often incorporating specialized techniques to facilitate personal growth.
  6. Distinction from Therapy:  Unlike equine-assisted therapy, which is focused on treating mental health conditions, EAL focuses on growth, education, and personal development.

Common Activities
Sessions often include activities that encourage interaction with the horses, including:

  • Catching a horse:  Building rapport and trust.
  • Grooming and hoof care:  Developing empathy and responsibility.
  • Leading and Obstacle Courses:  Practicing non-verbal communication, confidence, and leadership.
  • Group Challenges:  Enhancing teamwork and problem-solving skills.
